To BUY a car, nobody is going to check your drivers license. To REGISTER a car, they might.
But if you buy a used car from a dealer, they can handle the registration for you. I would suggest you get an 'International Drivers License'.

This is a fully legitimate travel related question. I know travellers who have done exactly the same in reverse in Australia. And I would not hesitate to ask similar questions on those forums. Now at least they have the appropriate starting point. Regarding the IDP. Everything mentioned above is correct. Its just that it only costs $10 or so and may or may not help if the OP was pulled over by the police.
Good point above about Insurance. That would definitely be the biggest sticking point. An IDP is absolutely superfluous in this instance. The official document is the drivers licence issued by the authorities in the country of origin - an IDP is just a translation of that into other languages. Otc Genisys 3.0 Manual. Here in NSW where both myself and OP live an IDP is issued by the local motoring authority ans has no legal standing, the same as any IDP issued in other countries.
