You will not get stopped if you are in a car unless you get picked for random inspection. You can not be denied entry back into the US. They migt give you a hard time and send you to secondary inspection but you will cross.

I go down there a lot so i can answer this. The san ysidro border crossing just got upgraded [on both sides]. You used to be able to just walk into mexico with no problem. But, now they have a pretty controlled entrance. Theyre gonna make you get their 20$ visa thats good for 6 months. All you need is a drivers liscence. Keep in mind this visa is good for all of mexico.
