CHP motorcycle officers are issued helmets. 1960-1963 Fixed-wing Cessna 172 and Piper Cub aircraft are tested for use in traffic observation. 1965 Shotguns are first installed in patrol vehicles. 1970 The shooting deaths of four CHP officers in Newhall prompts the CHP to make major changes in its training and car-stop procedures. 1975 The first female cadets graduate from the Academy. 1976 New Academy in West Sacramento is completed. 1977 “CHiPs” television show debuts. 1980 The first female motorcycle officer is Ramona Murray. Murray is now Ramona Prieto, director of the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
1981 Airplanes are used in conjunction with ground units for speed enforcement and aerial observation. 1985 Roadside Sobriety Checkpoint Program to randomly check for DUIs is established. 1988 Use of radar to enforce speed on roads in rural and unincorporated areas is allowed. 1990 CHiPper mascot is created. 2001 After Sept. 11, the CHP’s assigned response to terrorism is to oversee safety of state buildings, major bridges, aqueducts and the power grid.
2002 CHP becomes statewide coordinator for Amber Alert program.
