I've looked into modern alternatives like MuseScore etc. But they all involve awkward input methods that are no doubt fantastic for others, but don't work for me.

In Cakewalk Express, you picked the note length using the mouse and placed the note. It would play immediately and you could drag it up or down, hearing the note as it changed. It allowed me to quickly compose little musical ideas note-by-note. All the software I've seen these days is professional, has tons of features and functions more as a Notepad-type application where you use the keyboard to 'type' in notes, which is much slower for someone like me. In other words, modern notation software is like a digital version of writing sheet with the benefit of playback, whereas Cakewalk Express was more like the midi grid you get in DAWs, but using a sheet music structure and notes rather than a time grid with little rectangles.

Is there anything out there like this, or am I going to have to rethink the way I use notation software entirely? Addition: upon reflection I'd say one of the things that makes newer software feel clunky to me is the requirement to select notes and positions on the score before you do anything to them.
